SAINT PETER, a Galilean fisherman was called by Jesus to be a fisher of men. Due to Peter's faith, fidelity, enthusiasm and love he was showered with many favors by Jesus, who appointed him head of the Apostles, the "Rock" on which the Church was to be founded.

Peter witnessed many miracles and stayed close to Jesus, always listening, watching, learning, which in the end gave him strength and prepared him for his own missionary preaching.

Peter preached and performed miracles at many villages. He went to Samaria, Caesarea, Antioch and eventually ended up in Rome where he suffered martyrdom during the reign of Nero.

Peter is the patron saint of Rome and his feast day is June 29. Traditional emblems are a boat, keys and a rooster.
